W-4

W-4 helper

The 2020 W-4 does not ask for allowances. It asks for a dollar credit, other income, other deductions, extra withholding, and a checkbox if you have more than one job. This page shows how those entries move an estimate. It does not fill a legal form.

Step 2, the multiple-jobs checkbox, is approximated here with half the standard deduction and narrower brackets. That increases withholding. It is not the IRS worksheet that uses the other job’s wages.

Step 3 is a dollar credit for the year, not a count of people. Step 4(a) adds other income. Step 4(b) adds deductions beyond the standard deduction. Step 4(c) is extra withholding on every check, and it does not change the bracket math.
