New York
New York State paycheck calculator
New York State tax and New York City tax are different bills. This page estimates the state. City tax is added only if you open the city control and choose New York City or Yonkers. A software engineer in Buffalo, a nurse in Rochester, and a teacher in Albany do not pay the city resident tax just because the mailing address says New York.
The state standard deduction is much smaller than the federal one: $8,000 single and $16,050 joint in this model, with head of household at $11,200 from recent IT-201 instructions. The lower brackets start at 3.9%. A traditional 401(k) reduces New York wages. It does not reduce Social Security or Medicare. On top of the income tax, most employees see a small disability withholding capped at $31.20 a year and Paid Family Leave at 0.432% up to a $95,348.76 wage base.
If you live in the five boroughs, use the New York City page so the resident brackets are included. If you live in Yonkers, select Yonkers: residents pay 16.75% of their state tax as a surcharge, which is not the same thing as a flat wage percent. High earners should know that New York’s benefit recapture is not fully modeled past the 6.85% threshold.
