Illinois

Illinois paycheck calculator

Illinois taxes wages at a flat 4.95%. There is no standard deduction in the state table. There is a personal exemption of $2,925 for a single filer and $5,850 for a joint return, and it disappears if income is over $250,000 single or $500,000 joint. Chicago does not add a city income tax on wages in this model. The cost of living shows up in rent and sales tax, not as a second line under the state tax.

Because the rate is flat, a raise is easy to reason about and still not a simple 4.95% loss. Federal brackets can step up at the same time, and FICA stays at 7.65% until the Social Security wage base. A traditional 401(k) reduces both federal and Illinois wages. It does not reduce FICA. That is the useful experiment on the 401(k) page: the payroll-tax line refuses to move.

Reciprocity with Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, and Wisconsin can change which state withholds if you live in one and work in another. This estimate taxes the state you select. It does not prepare the exemption certificate or a credit for taxes paid to the work state.

Questions

Does Chicago have a city income tax?

Not in this paycheck model. Illinois flat tax is the state line. Use a custom local percent only if you truly have a local wage tax.

What is the Illinois exemption?

$2,925 single and $5,850 joint, dropped to zero above $250,000 or $500,000 of income. It is smaller than a federal standard deduction.

Is the 4.95% rate on gross or on taxable wages?

On wages after the exemption and after pre-tax deductions the state allows, including a traditional 401(k) in this model.
